Thee. We. Be.
Overview – Last installment in the sermon series –THEE. WE. BE.– Worship God – Connect w/
Others – Live out our purpose. We will be going deeper into this for the rest of the year until it
is how we come together in every interaction from service to small groups to check in meetings.
Reminder –
1. THEE is about embracing the sacred and leaning into worship. Worship is all the
practices – singing, prayer, meditation, dance, Bible study – that connect us with
God. If we don’t worship God we will worship something else. So we are keeping it
simple – follow the way of Jesus! Which means we have to know the way of Jesus.
2. WE is building kinship with our fellow beings. God’s Jubilee begins with everyone
being in tribes of belonging. And so too are we called to belong to each other. We
believe that God made all of us humans and all living things and in this church we
are focused on showing that we can and should love within the diversity of God’s
creation (human and non-human beings). There are those who stay segregated – but
Jesus says on Earth as it will be in Heaven and we choose to take up that charge.
Exegesis – The final step is BE.
Not do but be. In order to be we have to do things but being is about embodying – not just
talking about it but being about it. The church gets into a lot of trouble when we just try to
follow and enforce. God shows us that Love is best demonstrated with whole hearted action.
We are going for the full on embodiment and living of the radical teachings of Jesus not just a
belief in Jesus and a checking off of some basic rules!
The anthem song for this is This Little Light of Mine. It’s message is simple and clear and
reflects how we are called to live the BE. We spend the time to actually cultivate God’s
light within us and then we move through the world showing it.
Being is on two levels –
o We show up in the places that are dark to shine a light and expose truth and call
people to another way
o We Build the alternative. We show that it can be done on Earth as it is in Heaven
Resistance and Reimagination. Speaking Truth to Power and Building a New World
We are called to live into both. Jubilee House is just one way that we begin doing that, but as
we continue to grow we are called to keep living into it.
Reflections Questions
1. Creativity Exercise – Think about a current issue that is bothering/challenging you.
Imagine how you might be the change in that situation. Reflect on how you might shine
a light on the issue AND how you can build an alternative. [Consider put the two
different approaches on opposite sides of the paper.]
2. Thinking about New Roots – how can we Be the Change. Where do you see us called to
resistance and to reimagination? Where are we doing well, where could we go deeper?
Think as concretely as you can.
